The Sprinter's Lane - An Overview of Track Racing

Between 1890 and 1910, track racing was the most popular sport in the U.S. — even more popular than baseball! Part of what makes track racing so exciting is the fact that the riders are much closer to an even plane. This is because the riders' bikes are very similar to each other's, containing only the basic parts of a bicycle.

As with most sports, the more you know about it, the more likely you are to enjoy and appreciate it. Track racing is no different. There are many different components to track racing and the concepts can be difficult to grasp at first. In this section, we will attempt to explain and guide you through the common terms, races, rules and etiquette of track racing.

Due to its early origins, a track bike's composition goes back to the original form of the bicycle: not much more than wheels, frame and pedals. It does not have any breaks or derailleurs and has only one fixed gear, meaning, that you cannot coast while riding.
